“Working with Northwords helped us find a voice that feels true to who we are, uplifting, caring and safe. Everyone can now see what we do and who we do it for.”

Lauren Batty, Founder & CEO at Beyond the Margin

What they wanted: warmth with purpose

Beyond the Margin is a charity that provides community- and school-based support to people experiencing social isolation, mental health challenges, and hardship.

They needed a website and tone of voice that reflected their heart: uplifting, caring and safe, reassuring to those seeking help, yet confident enough to speak to potential donors, funders, and partners.

The charity’s work is deeply personal and often unseen, so the new site also needed to showcase its impact, the people behind the projects, the lives it touches, and the difference it makes every day.

What I delivered:

1. An uplifting, caring, safe tone

Working closely with CEO Lauren Batty, I defined a tone that feels human and grounded, warm but never sentimental, hopeful but never overstated.

The goal was to give Beyond the Margin a voice that speaks to everyone they reach: those who need support, those who give it, and those who fund it. Every word was chosen to build trust, compassion, and confidence.

Lauren's input was essential to this process, and we collaborated over remote calls and emails to make sure we captured the charity's zesty energy in a way that felt controlled, not chaotic.

2. A structure that showcases people and impact

Beyond the Margin’s strength lies in its people and community work. I collaborated with Lauren and web designer, Joel, to develop a bio and case study format that highlights individual stories and initiatives.

This format gives space to celebrate the people behind the projects and helps potential donors and supporters see exactly where their funding goes. It’s storytelling built on honesty, empathy, and pride.

3. Collaboration on the charity’s terms

Charities like Beyond the Margin have one priority: helping people. Our project had to fit around that.

Over several months, we worked together flexibly, refining, tweaking, and adding copy when time allowed. Each round built on the last until the website felt like an authentic reflection of the charity’s work and values.

The process was thoughtful, unhurried, and deeply collaborative, always on Beyond the Margin’s timeline, not mine. I love working like this because I'm more like a team member than a contractor.

The results?
See them here for yourself.

Beyond the Margin now has a digital home that reflects their heart, a website they can share proudly with funders, donors, and the communities they support.

It helps them stand out for all the right reasons in a crowded charity sector, building the visibility and trust they need to secure future funding.

And for me, it’s one of the most rewarding projects I’ve worked on. Lauren’s energy is infectious! It’s impossible not to get behind the incredible work she and her team are doing. Make sure you check them out!
